Closure of this website
After a good 8 years and 983 members, it is time for us to say good bye to this website. It was a pre Facebook era and we could remember the thrill of finding lost classmates. we certainly hope that through these years (via this website), you have found your lost friends, rekindled your old friendships, and found new opportunities.

Initially, I started this website for only the class of 79 and did not expect it to grow to cater for all the other batches and classes. I have many rewards doing this: besides the technical challenges, it has given to me a jump start towards finding lots of lost classmates and met new ones. With the closure of this website, I strongly believe that there would be a new beginning for all of us. (old things won't go, new things won't come)

Thank you again for your support and patronage all these years.

Warmest wishes from
Ricky Yin

School in need of a facelift

School in need of a facelift

SK Methodist (ACS) Kampar is nothing near the prestigious institution it used to be. At 107 years old, one would expect the Anglo Chinese School to stand tall and proud, reflecting its glorious past, but what stands in its place today is a dilapidated building in dire need of a facelift.

Relating the school’s state of affairs, the chairman of its board of governors Tham Leong said it was in serious need of repairs.

Founded by the late Reverend W.E. Horley in April 1903, the school once among the best in Perak with over 1,500 pupils in the 1970s, has only 398 pupils now.

The roofs are leaking, the basketball court is filled with potholes and the school hall’s ceiling is unsightly and has large holes due to the wear and tear.

The school’s pothole -riddled basketball court, isn’t as popular with the pupils, these days.
“These are just some of the problems that need fixing,” Tham said, adding that the leaks from the roof were so severe that classrooms on the top floors of two adjacent blocks had to be closed and are now out of bounds to students.

The school is no longer a conducive place for study because of the condition it is in, he said.

“Since it is in such a bad state, parents have been sending their children to other schools.

“Its population has dwindled by more than half in the last 20 years especially with new schools in surrounding areas,” said Tham.

“The irony of it all is the school, at its peak, drew pupils from neighbouring towns like Jeram, Malim Nawar, Temoh, Chenderiang and as far as Gopeng and Tronoh Mines.

“These pupils had to travel a considerable distance to get to the school,” he said.

Notable former pupils of the school include the late Tun Endon Mahmood, first wife of former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, former Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Nizar Jamaluddin, state Indian Affairs adviser Datuk S. Veerasingam, and JobStreet.com founder and chief executive officer Mark Chang.

“It used to be a top school producing some of the best results in the area and the state.

‘‘Right now, we have to restore the school to its former status before people are convinced and have the confidence to send their children here,” he added.

Pupils have to put up with cracked floors, damaged walls and other building defects in their classrooms. Shouldering the enormous and arduous task of the school’s restoration, Tham and a committee are organising a reunion dinner to raise funds for the school on Oct 31.

Some 500 former students and teachers are expected to attend the dinner themed ‘My Alma Mater Night - 107th Anniversary’ to be held at the school from 6.30pm onwards.

“We need at least RM1mil to restore the entire school, but we’ll see how much we raise and then decide on what needs to be done first.

“Last month, we managed to repair the main staircase and replace the broken sanitary ware and doors of the toilets with RM4,300 donated by a former student,” he said.

Tham noted that the class of 1979 had pledged RM16,000 for the repair of the basketball court, while the class of 1983, had given RM15,000 to renovate the hall.

“But we have yet to find someone who will undertake the roofing work which can easily come up to RM250,000.

“We are also hoping to get a structural engineer to volunteer his services in estimating the cost to build a retaining wall at the back of the school.

“There is no wall there and the hillslope is in danger of collapsing into the classrooms just metres away,” he said.

Tickets for the dinner are priced at RM50 each. Those who donate RM500 or more will be invited to participate in the ribbon-cutting ceremony. For details, call Tham (016-5621200) or committee members Yong Lee Peng (016-5655 297), Amiruddin Abdul Sukor (016-5294 406) and P. Maheswari (016-3370 586).
