35 Years ago - what were you doing?
Thirty-five years ago this Thursday, Malaysians were shocked out of the self-image they had taken for granted by riots the like of which many had never seen. IT has been 35 years since May 13, 1969. The ethnic conflict which occurred after the end of the war spread from Batu Pahat (Johor) to Pantai Remis (Perak). In between, Batu Kikir (Negri Sembilan) and Sungai Manik (Lower Perak) were also badly affected. ...

Sydney get together
I am just investigating if there is a possibility of a gathering among us who are currently living in Sydney. I have been slacked in this area (of organising) and with the impending arrival of Hew Yoon Onn (our Alumni president) to Sydney (on 28th, Sydney), I thought it is a darn good excuse.

Any suggestions of location? Even if this gathering did not eventuate, we can use this exercise to find out what it needs to do such an organisation.

What do you think?

Cast of the Tom Tit Tot play (1937)

Cast of the Tom Tit Tot play - 1937

At a recent ACS Old Boys lunch held at the Lee Wong Kee Restaurant, Kuala Lumpur, Mr. Thong Wee Kee showed lunchmates a copy of the 1938 ACS Kampar magazine (A year or two later the school magazine was named the KACSIAN). The contents of articles and photographs are interesting and informative.

On browsing through the magazine Mr. Lam Wah Seong excitedly told us that the cast of the play "Tom Tit Tot' came from the 1937 Standard II class (see photograph reproduced below) and proceeded to identify most of the cast members, as indicated under the photograph:

Standing (left to right)
1. Thong Chong Hing
2. Lam Wah Seong
3. Nadarajah
4. Wong Pak Choy
5. Do you know?
6. Do you know?
7. Yong Wen Joo

Seated Row (left to right)
1. Choong Hon Leong
2. Yap Kim Hoa

On hearing this, Mr. Thong congratulated Mr. Lam for his elephantine
memory, adding that some mutual friend had once commented on Mr. Lam's
power of recall.

How many of us can recognise our fellow students in photographs after 66 years? Can anyone studying in the school in the 1930s, identify the remaining two?

Alumni - without a leader!
The following mail is reproduced with permission from Wai Seng (G75) in his reply to Mr Lai. The mail explained and discussed various issues esp in the current "stalled" progress of our Alumni activities.

=======================================================
Dear Mr Lai,

Thanks for your message of postponement of the meeting. Unfortunately, it only arrived to me on Sunday afternoon.

There are a couple of points that I would like to highlight :-

1. Post of President and Deputy President

I came to understand that the Protem President (En Ahmad Tajuddin) who was the CPO (Chief Of Police) for Perak has been transferred to another state. Due to this, we (those present in the last meeting Feb 2003) have agreed, to the nomination of Deputy President to become the President. There were no nomination of the Deputy President and was left vacant. Lately, I came to understand that Mr. Wong Lee Wah has some personal problems and would not be able to carry out his duty as President. Therefore, at present both the post of President and vice president has been left vacant.

2. Cancellation of Meeting.

The meeting which was schedule for the last Sunday (25/5/2003) was cancelled due to the reason that the Principal was on leave. (The Principal is nominated as the Advisor.) A few of the committee members were present at the gate of the school but it was locked. Some has travel all the way from KL and Penang.

3. Notice of Meeting to the Alumni committee.

I noticed that nearly 70-80 % of the Protem committee did not attend any of the Alumni meetings so far. I came to know that the main reason was that they were not informed, even though some of them (Protem Committee) stay in Kampar.

4. Agenda

So far the agenda of the Alumni is geared toward the preparation of the 100 year celebration. We have never discussed on the activities of the Alumni club except the registration of the Alumni .

From the above, I notice that the Alumni club has been left without a leader. No meeting was called for since Feb 2003. Since your are the Secretary of the Alumni and the next highest ranking official , I therefore strongly urged you to call for a meeting immediately. Let not wait any further. Please notify all the Protem committee and those that are interested in serving in the Alumni. The meeting need not be held in the school. ( I assumed that without the present of the Principal , we cannot held the meeting in the school.) The meeting can be held outside the school building such as Kampar Club.

Please , once again, call for a meeting before all the interest in the activities of the Alumni are lost.

Regards

Wai Seng

State of the Alumni
------------------------------------------------------------------
*** Call for action: your opinion please. ***
Please reply directly to kampar_acs@yahoo.com.au

This mail was forwarded on behalf of Foong Wai Seng
------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear All,

As you know, the last meeting was cancelled. Since then I have not heard anything from them . I did request the Secreatry to call for an immediate meeting. But this request as fallen into deaf ear. There does not seem to be any urgency in organising activities for the members of the Alumni. To me, it seems that the present Alumni activities is gear very much to the need of the school. I don't means that this is bad. There will always be 'link' to the school. But we should not let the school to determine the activities of the Alumni like having meeting, etc. Meeting of the Alumni can and should be held as and when determine by the Alumni committee. But this does not seems to be it.

I have a suggestion. I notice that this website, look as though it has become the official site (for the time). More and more ex student have sign on and I am sure, most of them would like to see more activities such as news, etc. Using this website, We should ask all of them a series of question (code a poll) to determine the direction of the Alumni.

Questions such as :-

  1. Are they happy with the present Alumni activities?. What need to be done. Is organising the annual Alumni dinner the only function of the alumni?

  2. Do they want an Alumni night to be held in Kampar or KL, etc.

  3. What kind of activites that they would like to see done e.g news of visit to former teacher's home, etc.

  4. etc *** Please suggest ***

If nothing is being done to the present state of the Alumni, I think it would die a silent death.

Regards
Wai Seng

Alumni & 100th Year Anniversary
My first impression of the Alumni Association is that all is not well. There is no President at present and I was amazed that the last meeting was cancelled because the Principal was away on holidays. Did he lock all the rooms and take the keys with him – what about the janitor or jaga? The absence/presence of the President or Principal (Advisor), though important, should not cause the cancellation of the meeting. A Chairperson should be elected amongst those present to conduct the meeting. The only important thing that matters is that all decisions and resolutions made at the meeting should be confirmed or ratified at the next meeting.

The fundamental problem appears to be twofold – the lack of communication and feedback and the lack of determination and commitment.

A Chinese philosopher once said, “A journey of a thousand li begins with the first step” The first step has begun. What is needed is the sustained energy and determination to maintain the pace. A small and committed group of persons with the will and determination to succeed should take up the cudgel and run with it.

At this point in time, I assume that the Alumni Association has not been registered. Someone should take the initiative to write up the constitution or objectives of the Association. The simplest way of doing this is to borrow the constitution or article of association of another school’s alumni association and modify it to suit our needs. This should be presented to the next meeting for adoption. Remember that the first draft constitution would not be perfect. It would need to be revised or amended to suit the needs of the time.

I agree that the present synergy of the Association should be devoted to the organizing of the 100th year celebration of the school. The activities and affairs of the Association should take secondary precedence unless there are sufficient active members to continue this work. The 100th year anniversary of the founding of the school is April 2003 and this important date was missed which is disappointing. The new date is 2 August and there is scant information on the website to suggest that the programme for the celebration is well in advance and on track. Who is organizing the celebration?

For those who live overseas, including yours truly, who cannot attend the celebration, we send you greetings and best wishes and wish you success in your endeavours. At the very least, we join you in spirit in the celebration and sing the school song with gusto :-
“In the year 1903, a great pioneer was Horley,
He planted this beacon with great success, over this building ACS.
Sing ACS forever more.......” Cheers!

State of the Alumni - a step forward
I have managed to speak to Mr Chye Kooi Loong on the recent Alumni meeting held on the Tuesday (last). As I mentioned earlier, I was not able to attend this meeting.

1. The Principal was not available (did not attend) as he was in Ipoh for a meeting.

2. As far as I can gather, about 6 person attended the meeting . There are En Azlan, Mr Choo FW, Mr Lai MK (all ex student currently teaching in the school), Mr Chye and one Mr. Hew (is this Yan On?)(1977)

3. The constitution of the club were discussed and finalised. One of the point that was discussed is that the Alumni must be run by ex students.

4. A one time membership fee would be collected upon signing up as members. There is an amount suggested but I can't remember how much was stated.

5. The club would be forwarding the application for registration.

6. Mr Hew (1977) had agreed to organise some activities for the celebration. (We have to wait for it in the next meeting)

7. Although they have agreed to meet up again but I do not have the date.

I will keep you all inform if anything comes up.

Prevent your lost phone from being used!
Just in case you lose your mobile or it gets flogged. You can prevent your mobile phone from being used by anyone else!

To check your Mobile phone's serial number, key in the following digits on your phone: * # 0 6 # A 15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. Should your phone get stolen, you can phone your Service Provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the Sim card, your phone will be totally useless. You probably won't
get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If everybody did this, there would be no point in stealing mobile phones.

Some practical advice for SARS
The fact of the mysterious pneumonia has been widely spread in HK drives me to do a literature review on the suspected cause (i.e.coronavirus) of the SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome). As a biomedical researcher, let me show you my concern and make the following suggestions.

The basic mechanism of viral attack is that the viruses replicate themself using the host's (in this case is "our") DNA genetic replication system. By doing this, our body couldn't function well due to the massive viral replication. Supposingly, the immune cells in our body will fight off the infected viruses quickly. However, the viruses are so smart that they could be able to produce some chemical substances to cause our immune cells to die.

Besides, this coronavirus is a new kind of virus which belongs to a mutated strain and our body cannot recognize it.

No antibiotics have been proved to be 100% effective in treating viral infection so far. The only effective way to get rid of it is by ourselves. It likes a prolonged battle between the viruses and our immune response.

In fact, viruses couldn't kill all the immune cells in a health individual. The stronger the immune function you have, the less the viral injury you get. Therefore, the degree of sickness after infection and the rate of recovery mainly depends on how strong your immune function is.

You cannot avoid the infection unless you avoid from those infected individuals/area. But, you can try your best to boost up your immune function by several regimes. Make sure you are "extremely healthy" at least during this critical period. Stronger immune function could keep the viral damage minimal even you were so unluckily being infected. Also, stronger immune function delays the onset of any detrimental effects from the viral infection. Scientists are now working on tracking the treatment and so make sure you are still surviving until an effective treatment occurs.

The following suggestions aim to strengthen your immune function within a short period of time.

1) Antioxidant nutraceuticals: Antioxidants are chemicals found in foods which exert a great value in strengthening our immune system.

Boost up your immune function by taking a cocktail of antioxidant supplements.

- Vitamin E 1000 IU per day. Alpha-tocopherol is the biological active form of vitamin E.
There are two forms of it: d-tocopherol and dl-tocopherol. d- is the natural form and dl- is the synthetic form.
Try to get the d- form because it is absorbed faster in our body.

- Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) 1000 milligram (mg) daily.
Instead of taking supplement, you can take 2 pieces of citrus fruits (e.g. orange) a day to get the vitamin C.

- Beta-carotene, not more than 10000 IU daily

- Selenium, 200 microgram daily

- Zinc, not more than 500 milligram (mg) daily

- Lipoic acid, 50 mg daily

- Glutathione, 50 mg daily

No any adverse effects have been reported from the above suggested supplementation dose.

2)- Let green tea to be your daily beverage because it contains tremendous amount of antioxidant flavonoid, catechins.

- Eat more tomatoes, broccoli or fruits and vegetables in red and dark green color.
They carry a huge amount of antioxidant carotenoids, lycopene and carotene.

3) No intense physical activities during this critical period!
It has been shown that intense exercise will suppress your immune function(related to the upper respiratory infection) even several days following your workout. Instead of intense exercise, light-to-moderate workout helps if you have been training regularly.

4) Make sure you get enough carbohydrate foods (e.g. rice, foodconcentrated in starch... etc) because carbohydrate is the primary food for immune cells.

Do some Gatorade or Pocari if needed since they are both good sources ofcarbohydrate.

5) Make sure you get enough sleep and don't make yourself so stressful!
Anxiety, depression, and fatique will influence your body's stress hormones (e.g. catecholamine and glucocorticoids) and so suppress your immune status.

6) Mouth-mask helps despite it is not 100% effective. But it can still decrease the chance from infection.

All the above information are supported by peer-reviewed biomedical literatures, that means they are credible and reliable!

God bless and I really hope that none of you will get infected and I will pray for all of you in every moment!

Good luck and take extremely care.
