Special Projects

Freight Tracking System
This was our second simultaneous project with a high profile SMS company. We were asked to look into the coordination and project management of this project to ensure its delivery at its highest commercial quality and on time. We started by interviewing existing engineers to prepare a proper Functional Specification for the project. Internal researches were also conducted by our own Engineers to ensure that the technologies and decisions taken in the prototyping of this product are correct. Completed Business Requirement and Functional Specification documents at industry standards level . We have assumed total responsibility in both the hand held (Pocket PC development) and the backend development to commercialise the product. A pilot was run and it was a complete success. The number of bugs reported is less than a handful thus showing the quality of our work.

Postal Run
This was our first project with a high profile SMS company. While this was not one of our most innovative solutions, this project seeked to demonstrate our experience in putting together the most practical solution through smart sourcing of the right 3rd party components. A requirement document detailing the project risks was produced and various prototypes to mitigate against the project risks were also suggested. Successfully completed comprehensive prototypes and identified further action plans to bring the system to production.

Web Enabled Notice Board
We fast-tracked the implementation of a J2EE version of an existing C++ rich client product to web-enable its notice board functionalities when it was discovered that DCOM was too restrictive. This project has completed early.

Integration to Incidental Information Management System
Our previous assignment which demonstrated our speed of delivery plus our continuing high quality output lead us to further assignment with our existing client; this time to develop an integration J2EE project for their existing product to a 3rd party J2EE system product. Besides battling new frontiers in J2EE integration (server to server communication), we designed a single deployment configuration to various hosts (including embedded OC4J) environment without having to change their deployment files. Other special requirements include a single source strategy to be backward compatible with their existing code while able to switch to the new logics without recompiling.

Total Information System
Soft-Trek was asked to create a custom fit software solution when existing off the shelf software products were tried but found to be insufficient. The Soft-Trek team uses its advanced Windows NT knowledge (some of which could be used to write virus program) to develop this solution. The positive usage of NT knowledge to put into good use especially into an innovative solution is remarkable. Version 1 was released and is installed on 34 sites!. Version 2 was completed.

Reporting System
Soft-Trek was asked to create a reporting system when Oracle Report is not sufficient. The Soft-Trek team designed a Java/Taglib based template system to output a variety of report (CSV,PDF,HTML) using the same data input. The project has completed early!

Timetable Publishing System
Soft-Trek was brought in to perform a health check on a project that was supposed to be completed in September, 2002. Feedback through objective analysis on the project convinced the management to re-do the project by building a proper infrastructure and using the best practices and best technologies. Soft-Trek also assisted in securing the right resources for a high power team for the project. Project was rescued.

Document management system for Tower Technology.
This was a two year $6 million project. Soft-Trek worked with Tower's own staff to ensure that the best practices and best technologies were applied throughout the project design and implementation phases.

One of the first Web based insurance quotation system.
Soft-Trek worked with top IBM and CSA staff to

• design a common persistence architecture for the client's Web based insurance quotation system on Java.
• mentor development staff on Java and software maintenance techniques

Web Survey System
Soft-Trek was called into a small but rush project to implement a web based survey system to collect data centrally from all the company's agents from all the Australian states. We were given various spreadsheets as inputs but able to develop an effective survey system and most importantly completed the project way early!

A Smartcard petrol voucher system.
Soft-Trek was brought in to design a system to reduce or eliminate fraud scam on kiosks operators. Soft-Trek designed and implemented store value software for a petrol voucher system. In this project, Soft-Trek was responsible for the whole software system including the RS-232 communication library to interface with Smartcard encoders and hand-held units.

An intelligent carpark system.
Soft-Trek designed and implemented a high-end multi-level carpark security system. In this project, Soft-Trek was responsible for the core software system including the RS-232 communication library to interface with Smartcard encoders, electronic signs, and interprocess communication to 3rd party video identification system. The system was designed to reduce or eliminate car theft besides adding smart card functionalities. This product was part of a suite of smart-card applications for a smart card company thus adding value to the vendor.

A high end Access Control Security system.
This was a three year $2 million project to develop the first commercially available Access Control System based on Windows NT. Soft-Trek assisted Siemens' staff in getting the initial release of the product to market only 6 months after NT was released. This gave Siemens a great marketing edge.

A RAS based peer-peer employees records synchronization system.
Soft-Trek was brought into this project when SQL server replication was not efficient enough. Soft-Trek designed and implemented a working, intelligent and efficient employee synchronisation system.

An automated integrated University student/security smart card update system
Soft-Trek worked with University staff to automate the assigning and revoking of access control privileges to ever changing University staff and students. The benefit was immediate in reducing the work load of University administrators.

A CCTV system.
Soft-Trek worked with existing engineer to commercialize and refactor an in-house project. Soft-Trek was brought into the project (without prior video switching internal protocols knowledge) but completed the project on time and on budget.

A web based membership sub-system.
Soft-Trek designed a web based membership sub-system to lighten the load of web administrators by creating an easy to use self-maintained membership system. The system was tested live with more than 580 members.

e-Quiz Master Engine.
Soft-Trek designed a web based quiz sub-system to allow school teachers, HR and web masters to run quizzes easily. The engine supports two types of quizzes (test quizzes and personality quizzes). These are exemplified in "Fun e-Quiz" and "Quiz Quiz".
